Course Title: Decoding the DSM: A Critical Look at the DSM and Liberated-oriented Alternatives
Start Date: TBD
Presenter: Sara Eldridge, LCSW (she/her)
This 3-hour course critically examines the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM). Designed for mental health professionals engaging with the complexities of diagnosis for use when using health insurance & engaging with the medical model for increased access to care, this course offers a liberated-oriented, and responsive lens for understanding mental/emotional distress beyond the limits of diagnostic pathology.
While recognizing the clinical utility of diagnostic frameworks for access to care, we also critically examine their cultural, historical, and systemic roots — and the ways they can distort, support and/or constrain care.
